Meredith Breaks Her Arm!

Any parent hates to see their child hurt, but Meredith's courage and attitude are inspiring! She fell at Gymboree on Monday night and hit her arm on a platform. At first we thought it was dislocated at the elbow; you could tell it wasn't lined up right since her arm just wasn't straight. We took her to the closest ER where x-rays showed a break just above the elbow. The nurse gave her morphine and a splint and an ambulance transported her to the children's hospital where she had surgery at about 11 pm to set the bone and put in 3 pins. She did wonderfully - the doctors and nurses were fabulous. They said this is a common break for kids - it's a weak spot and the way they hold their arms when they fall makes that part more vulnerable. In fact, they had already done this same surgery on a 2 year old earlier that day, and had a 3rd one immediately after Meredith. We were able to bring her home at about 10 am Tuesday. She has been a trooper through it all - not complaining about much - just tells us she's a little wobbly when she walks and her arm is heavy. She has a cast on her arm now, with a sling to help support it when she's awake. The swelling is starting to go down finally. Her pain meds make her sleepy, so she's taking lots of naps right now. Meredith will go to the doctor next week to have it checked and receive a more permanent cast, which she can choose a color for! That will stay on for 2-3 more weeks. It did break at a growth plate, so we pray for healing of that spot. She will need follow up appointments for a year to monitor the healing because of this. Here's a picture of her with her cast. And while in the hospital she requested her cousin Jasmine to paint her nails!
On Tuesday night, finally back at home, Meredith was saying her bedtime prayers. She usually says, "Thank you God for a good day, Cake." (She prayed for cake one time and the next day the neighbor brought us one - so she's prayed for it everyday since. It's kind of replaced Amen!) But on Tuesday night she started to say this prayer but stopped in the middle, looked at Greg and said she couldn't say thank you for a good day because it wasn't a good day. When Greg asked why it wasn't a good day she said, "I went to Gymboree, then I fell and broke my arm and had to go to the hospital and then I had to sleep there and my arm hurts..." Poor little Meredith! So instead they thanked God for all the people that love her and are praying for her. And we thank you all!!! Greg took Meredith to the library last night for her special night out and he said this cast hasn't slowed her down at all!

That was very touching to read about Meredith's bedtime prayer. Even at only three years old, she has learned a very valuable lesson that she will never forget.
