Mom, I'm a big girl now.

For almost three years now, the naptime routine has been to rock and sing to Amanda, then Claire, then Melissa - each for about 2 minutes, then lay them down for a nap. When they got to be about 18 months to two, I added reading a story for each girl to that routine. Well, yesterday that routine came to a screeching halt. I have changed the order some lately, at their request, and also because Melissa seems to need a little more sleep than Amanda. So yesterday I read/sing/rock Melissa. Then I read/sing/rock Claire. Then comes Amanda. I read. And then as I get ready to turn Amanda onto my shoulder she says, "Mom, I'm three now. I'm too big for you to sing to me." Did you hear that record scratch as everything came to a screeching halt? Not mommy, just mom. And what do you mean you're too big for me to sing to you? So we walked to her naptime crib and I set her in without singing.

I sang to her at bedtime. I didn't give her a chance to ask me not to.

My heart aches for you. They do grow up. Hannah has never let me sing to her. She puts her hands on my cheeks, looks at me very seriously and says, "No sing Mama, no sing."
