We took the girls swimming for the first time today at the Y's new outdoor pool. We had planned for the girls and I to meet Greg there at 5pm after he got off work. So at 3:40 I got the girls up from their nap, changed diapers, put on swimsuits, fed them their snacks, Meredith and I put on our suits, got suntan lotion on everyone, gathered towels, extra diapers, and changes of clothes, put on swim shoes and swim cover-ups, put Claire's shoes back on, got everyone downstairs, gathered up all our stuff plus the water cups I'd already prepared. Loaded up the car, let Kali out to potty, locked up the house and headed out at 4:50. If I did my math correctly, it took me 1 hour and 10 minutes just to get everyone ready to go swimming!
The pool is really fun! It has a walk in side, kind of like at the beach, where you just gradually get deeper and deeper. There are slides that twist and turn, tunnel slides, fountains that shoot water way up in the air, fountains that are shaped like circles and several other fun water park type areas. Meredith had a great time. The triplets... not so much. Amanda started crying as soon as the water got up to her knees. Claire saw Amanda cry, so she started too and also wanted out. Melissa was doing okay until another child went running by and splashed water in her face. So the triplets and I mostly sat on the side while Greg and Meredith played some. Over the next 15 minutes or so, Melissa walked and danced in the water with Greg, Claire walked in the water some and sat on a step to splash, Melissa came back to sit with Claire, and Amanda finally sat on the step also to splash around a bit. As soon as they started exploring the water and feeling a bit more comfortable, the lifeguards blew their whistles for everyone to get out.
Now for a little more math: Due to traffic on Greg's trip home, we didn't get into the pool until 5:30. The lifeguards blew their whistles at 6pm. So Meredith got 30 minutes in the water, Melissa about 20, Claire about 10 and Amanda about 5. By 6:05 there were still no lifeguards preparing to open the pool back up and the girls were getting restless, so we decided to go ahead and pack up to go home. I got the girls changed and ready to go home in about 15 minutes.
Prep time: 1 hour 10 minutes
Time in Water: varied, from 5 to 30 minutes
Time to dry off and change: 15 minutes

Um..at least Meredith had fun?? Doesn't it seem like there's always a lot of prep for just a little fun? It's worth it to them, though! Love those swim cover-ups!
